a smattering of gold

Memories of my grandmother, who took me shopping for my 16th birthday and bought me a simple gold chain. 25 years later, and to my absolute horror, my toddler found it and gummed it beyond all recognition. Thank goodness she didn’t swallow it! After I stopped being miffed and annoyed with myself for leaving it in the reach of sticky hands, I was just sad. But then I recycled each broken chain into individual granules and experimented with embedding them into silver. The process was very therapeutic and it made me happy. And so old and broken became new. “Smattered” became a thing.

I return to this process every so often and pieces usually sell at exhibitions before they get online.
